About Me

My photo
Last year I turned the big 3.0 and got married - I thought that was my milestone year. As it turns out, 2009 quickly overshadowed 2008 when my husband and I found out we were pregnant. I'm going to be experiencing everything for the first time as a woman and an expectant mother which is why I'm calling this my year of firsts. I'm senior editor for Marie Claire South Africa.

Eco nappies

While in Cape Town, Sadie took me to Kids Emporium, a kiddies shop with the most beautiful hand-knitted cotton jerseys, Moses baskets, babygrows and more... Cape Town seems to have the best shops when it comes to kiddies's stuff. We actually went there to look for maternity things but instead my eyes fell on these bamboo nappies I'd heard so much about from Mariette, whose friend swears by.
The range is by www.mothernatureproducts.co.za and is the eco answer to the landfill problem we have in this country. But I must confess, my motive was not an environmental one, but rather, the nappies look and feel so divine and they cost a fraction of the price of the disposable ones. Apparently, the average amount parents spend on nappies in a baby's lifetime is R27 000. These babies cost R3 500 - you get 22 bamboo nappies in green, pink, beige, white... as well as a nappy liners/covers, and a few disposable liners which you use to line the nappy with and then dispose of when she poops or pees. Basically, it's a kit for life!
I just bought a starter kit (one nappy, 55 liners and one nappy cover) and still buy the one pack of nappies a month to stock up but will definitely give these ones a bash.

  1. pardon me for being silly burt, are you going to wash the nappy yourself? I've always wondered about reusable nappies. Can you toss them in the washing mashine? What happens to the poo in the washing machine? Could your next load be covered in it or something? hm

  2. Shame. Why should you know heartwarmer? You buy these disposable liners which tuck into the nappy. When the nappy is dirty, you take it out and flush the disposable bit down the toilet. You can also get a tub with detergent to pre-wash, but if there's been some leakage, you just rinse and chuck into the machine.
