About Me

My photo
Last year I turned the big 3.0 and got married - I thought that was my milestone year. As it turns out, 2009 quickly overshadowed 2008 when my husband and I found out we were pregnant. I'm going to be experiencing everything for the first time as a woman and an expectant mother which is why I'm calling this my year of firsts. I'm senior editor for Marie Claire South Africa.

Aches and pains

It's far too early to be complaining about aches and pains I know but according to What To Expect When You're Expecting which I read in my first trimester, this particular ache is right on schedule. It feels like I've gotten in a good few hours of exercising my lower half (particularly the pelvic area) and am now suffering from over doing it. In that case it's good and bad pain. Good because you know the pain is worth it. Bad because you walk around like an unfit 50 year old.
In my case, it is neither good nor bad - just damn uncomfortable. And I can't help but groan when I lower myself into seats, get out of bed and stand around or walk. Just like a granny.

Embarrassing. And it's only the beginning. I'm going to have to (wo)man up! Though I've found this book very informative, it doesn't get into the nitty gritty. What's going to happen to my vagina - really! What's the pain going to feel like - really. Some case studies and voices from women who've been through it before would help. I came across this really gross website called 6 TERRIFYING THINGS THEY DON'T TELL YOU ABOUT CHILDBIRTH which can be found on http://cracked.com/article_article_16508_6-terrifying-things-they-dont-tell-about-childbirth.html

The image I've posted is what they liken childbirth to but if you really want to be grossed out - check out this link, which they also give you the option of clicking on or not! you have been warned.

Maybe it's better not to know the truth!

  1. that placenta? SIES! it is most DEFINITELY better to know the truth! then you won't freak out wondering whether what is happening to you is normal or not. i say get as grossed out and shocked as you can get, then by comparison, hopefully your own experience won't be so bad!

p.s. if that episiotomy breakdown in '6 terrifying things' didn't make u change your mind about natural birth...i don't know what will!

  3. I know. When I showed Hein the pictures, first I prepared him for the absolute worst and he said - maybe I shouldn't be in the delivery room... HELL NO! I said. I'm not going in there alone!
When I showed him the pics later that night, he wasn't as grossed out as I was.

Eish! I don't know. Many women have done it before... was chatting to a colleague who's had two - one natural and the other one natural water birth. She says you heal and get over it. That caesarian wound reminds you for weeks of the pain. It's major surgery you know. Neither options are particularly appealing. And I really don't want to linger in hospital. I've only ever been there to visit you, Zan, Hein and mom there and it stinks!
