About Me

My photo
Last year I turned the big 3.0 and got married - I thought that was my milestone year. As it turns out, 2009 quickly overshadowed 2008 when my husband and I found out we were pregnant. I'm going to be experiencing everything for the first time as a woman and an expectant mother which is why I'm calling this my year of firsts. I'm senior editor for Marie Claire South Africa.

Superficial mom

The night before last I dreamt our baby came out super large, over developed (i.e. with a mane of long wet red hair and could talk already) and ugly!
As much as I tried, the love for her wouldn't come. And I could see Hein struggling too. Funny, I didn't even remember giving birth to her although for some reason I knew she was premature. The only thing I was thankful for was having skipped the whole hospital saga...

I know many women say that a mother never thinks her own child is ugly... I beg to differ. What does this dream mean? Am I just plain superficial? Are all the negative comments I've made about other people's babies going to  be revisited on mine? I investigated a site www.makemebabies.com where you use your partner's photo and yours and the computer regenerates an image of what your baby is going to look like. With the best facing forward photos I could find, I uploaded and waited. Yes - I tried a few times.... You also have the choice of choosing Black, White, Indian or mixed race. I went for black and mixed race. Aarrrrgggghhh!!! Who are these girls?
I told Hein about the results and he still refuses to look at them - I guess we both have the same fears then...

  1. *gasp* these are awful!!!! picture 1 looks like a drug addict. picture 2 looks like it has that ageing disease. picture 3 looks like an annoying and friiendless miss know-it-all. and picture 4...no man. she has a face like minnie driver...and that's never cute!

none of these 'girls' look like either of you. you and hein are working with DAMN good genes...anything that comes out of you looking like those things up there...well...you'd need to take it back to the hospital and ask for your real baby back!

  6. Wait until you have somebody growing in your tummy that you've made... I think it's more concerned curiosity than worry... I'm sure I'll love her regardless!
