About Me

My photo
Last year I turned the big 3.0 and got married - I thought that was my milestone year. As it turns out, 2009 quickly overshadowed 2008 when my husband and I found out we were pregnant. I'm going to be experiencing everything for the first time as a woman and an expectant mother which is why I'm calling this my year of firsts. I'm senior editor for Marie Claire South Africa.

Not-to-be-missed sale

It was a bun fight at Country Road today! There's a Woolworths sale on at the moment and you know how those are. Ingrid and I went to Sandton trying to keep blinkers on focusing only on getting me sexy smalls for a dirty weekend away with hubby. Even a pregnant girl's gotta look sexy! But alas, the red tag caught Ingrid's eye and the next thing you know both our arms were laden with summer dresses and accessories at prices like R261, R119 and other rare sights in this section of Woolies.

Yes I felt guilty after the purchases were made but I felt great too! I know I had decided to only have maternity clothes made for me but frankly they are taking too bloody long and these prices were too good to pass up. If you know CR, you'll know that their summer dresses usually cost R1200 and up. A friend of mine wore the dress I've pasted on this post to my wedding. Isn't it glorious?

Head on down there girls! But stay away from the tomato red dress and the cream and little black starry dress!

Happy shopping!

Aches and pains

It's far too early to be complaining about aches and pains I know but according to What To Expect When You're Expecting which I read in my first trimester, this particular ache is right on schedule. It feels like I've gotten in a good few hours of exercising my lower half (particularly the pelvic area) and am now suffering from over doing it. In that case it's good and bad pain. Good because you know the pain is worth it. Bad because you walk around like an unfit 50 year old.
In my case, it is neither good nor bad - just damn uncomfortable. And I can't help but groan when I lower myself into seats, get out of bed and stand around or walk. Just like a granny.

Embarrassing. And it's only the beginning. I'm going to have to (wo)man up! Though I've found this book very informative, it doesn't get into the nitty gritty. What's going to happen to my vagina - really! What's the pain going to feel like - really. Some case studies and voices from women who've been through it before would help. I came across this really gross website called 6 TERRIFYING THINGS THEY DON'T TELL YOU ABOUT CHILDBIRTH which can be found on http://cracked.com/article_article_16508_6-terrifying-things-they-dont-tell-about-childbirth.html

The image I've posted is what they liken childbirth to but if you really want to be grossed out - check out this link, which they also give you the option of clicking on or not! you have been warned.

Maybe it's better not to know the truth!

Baby girls

Now that we know we're having a girl, I can focus properly on girls' names and guess who doesn't like any of my choices. Yes, including Amalia. Do you know what Hein suggested as a name? Daisy! Daisy I ask you with tears in my eyes! Daisy is a cow and not a little girl! No offence to any mums or grannies who have such a name but really, we might as well name her Beauty, or Precious or Congratulations! Once again, no offence. The power struggle begins... we both have naming veto but surely I should have more power?

So last night I was trawling the Internet for names and I came across these new ones. Our little one is definitely going to have two names - I still really love the Swahili ones. And I'd like her to have an African name. Ironic since I've always been proud that my parents never gave us so-called 'Christian' names

Kenzi - Irish
Rae - lamb
Lea - delicate (Hebrew)
Tate - cheerful
Sia - bringer of joy
Mila - friendly, soft, pleasant (Greek)
Noelle - Xmas (I know, meaningless really)
Olivia - symbol of peace
Ulani - heavenly rain

Any thoughts?
