About Me

My photo
Last year I turned the big 3.0 and got married - I thought that was my milestone year. As it turns out, 2009 quickly overshadowed 2008 when my husband and I found out we were pregnant. I'm going to be experiencing everything for the first time as a woman and an expectant mother which is why I'm calling this my year of firsts. I'm senior editor for Marie Claire South Africa.

Nesting

I didn't want to get out of bed this morning. Everything was swollen - from my nose, to my cheeks, right down to my feet. I think it's because I slept with the heater on - a 400w wall heater that really does not have much effect... But what's a girl to do - freeze to death? And boy is our house cold! And Hein was out til late so I had to make a plan. And now I'm paying for it.

Wow! Being pregnant is humbling. I've never considered myself vain. But I guess if you've never had problem skin or crooked teeth or an overbite... you kind of take your looks for granted. It's one thing if you've let yourself go and have slowly witnessed the downward spiral without any alarm bells going off... but it's another if you've had nothing to do with it and are rendered hostage to your body. Were it not for that fact, I would be horribly depressed. For now, I stay mildly upset and am keeping to myself. I'm focusing on house and home or as they say nesting. I hate that word and the fact that there's this 'scientific' explanation for pregnant women who are about to give birth who suddenly want to make their house and nursery look nice and ready for baby. Puhleeze! It's normal -- like what you would do if your inlaws or parents or friends were coming to stay for a spell... it's not some chemical trigger that goes off when you get close to delivering... nxa!

Image: I used to love that book! I remember Mrs Davies at Maris Stella reading it out to us often at aftercare. And all this time I thought it was a Dr Seuss book!

Last sighting

We saw our LG again yesterday afternoon. It's been months since we saw her last and it was magical seeing her lips and nose (side profile) on the sonogram. Her hands were making fists, opening and closing every now and again. Hein was standing at the foot of the bed -- he could only look at me, and then at the screen and squeeze my foot with excitement. I just wanted to reach into the screen and pull her out! Our emergency doctor, Dr Mia, who will be on standby should anything go wrong with the delivery says he thinks it will be a routine birth and I should expect to go into labour around 38 weeks. That's in four week's time and the baby's room isn't even ready yet! Eeek!
That was the last time we're going to see her until she makes her big debut.

Today I received the Mother Nature nappies - they are absolutely gorgeous! quite pricey to order but will stand me us in good stead for the future - and we won't be contributing to those landfills!
The nappy covers come in boy and girl colours - I got pink, green, beige and white; and the actual nappies come in beige and white. If you had to feel how soft they are you would understand!

Best baby shower ever

I've been putting off posting because I wanted to chat about my baby shower and the sterling job my sister and Karin did. My rule is usually no picture no post but I couldn't wait any longer.

What a fabulous day it was, gorgeous cheeses, wine and breads, quiches... Then phase 2 was a viewing of some of my most loved cheesiest but classic songs and photos of my friends as little girls and a video message from my mom all played on a big screen in a private theatre - red seats and everything.
Phase 3 was coffee and desserts, and releasing of the these butter yellow balloons - each person had written a message to LG and the parents which were attached to the balloon. I went around reading out the messages and then the balloons were released... (that's the picture I will insert when I find the camera adaptor somewhere in the mess that is our home right now) Phase 4 was the opening of presents. Mom and LG got spoiled.

So I just wanted to thank everyone who made the day really special: Thonga, Sarah, Danica, Aspasia, Alexandra, Tsholo, Mariette, Kholeka and most especially my big sister Zan, Karin and Mrs Coetzee for the best baby shower ever.
