About Me

My photo
Last year I turned the big 3.0 and got married - I thought that was my milestone year. As it turns out, 2009 quickly overshadowed 2008 when my husband and I found out we were pregnant. I'm going to be experiencing everything for the first time as a woman and an expectant mother which is why I'm calling this my year of firsts. I'm senior editor for Marie Claire South Africa.

Big weekend

There's lots to celebrate this weekend! Sunday, the 21st marks my 31st birthday, Father's Day and I'll officially be 8 months. In the past I would have planned a night of dinner followed by dancing the night before but now I'm more inclined to invite a few friends over for a Sunday roast. They say nesting tends to start big time round this time. But whether I'll be in the mood to do that, I can't really say.

My hubby is out of town and back on Sunday afternoon. He's off to Grahamstown for his aunt's funeral. Shame, so many of my mother-in-law's siblings have passed away recently. My heart goes out to her because I don't know what I'd do if I lost any of my sisters.

Anyway, our Sundays are usually sacred. Unless there's something else that Hein simply can't say no to - a big game, a family braai, a friend's birthday, a meeting... it's usually DVDs, a late Sunday lunch or take-away and nesting under the blankets on the couch. It has become my favourite day of the week - before it used to be my worst!

So we'll see how everything goes... maybe an intimate dinner out on Saturday evening with just the ladies? The guys are irritating me at the moment.

Fashion Week

It is with much dread that I'm heading out to Arise Africa Fashion Week this evening... especially after I had such a lovely night learning how to cook Greek food at Aspasia's house last night night. What fun us girls had - me, Aspasia, Zan, Karin, Samantha, Sharon and Mariette had a great time chopping and grating and watching as Aspasia showed us to make some unpronounceable but really 'scrumptious' Greek dishes involving cheese, Phyllo pastry, prawns, Greek yoghurt, honey, Pecan nuts, tomatoes... not all in the same dish of course.

So with nothing new and fresh to wear I'm just going in a black dress (always the safest) and leggings and heels, having a networking dinner with some highflyers invited by Absa Capital at Anica's Deli and then catching the Malcolm Kluk show. It will be my first fashion show this year having missed the summer collection earlier this year. Eish! We'll see how it goes. I keep on having this idea of dropping the organiser a mail and declaring that I'm either too sick or too busy to attend an sending my humblest apologies but know I'll regret not going... so go I must. I've heard it's inspiring!

60 days

I didn't think it would happen this soon but it seems I'm waddling. At first it was only happening when I was getting out of bed or off the couch after watching a movie because my limbs get damn sore. But now it's all the time! If you've ever played The Sims you'll now what I'm talking about - Roselle - you'll know! when The Sim gets pregnant, and her belly sticks out and she slowly waddles to the kitchen to make something to eat...

By the way, eat your heart out Ros! I bought The Sims 3 - and it's fantastic apart from the fact that you can't fast forward through the boring actions like sleeping and eating. You literally have to watch your Sim sleeping for 10 minutes while he or she slowly regains her energy... big mistake on the creators' part. I'm hoping they're going to release a free patch to rectify the problem. So anyone who wants to buy it - wait until they release the second version... www.thesms3.com

In the meantime, I have exactly 60 days until my due date; and 52 days until my maternity leave starts. I'm taking four months' leave - one month unpaid. So I need to stay at work as long as possible so I don't have to come back to work in December... hope baby is patient til then!
